'O' means 'a place of' and 'hope' is 'the body of an army' in the Maori language. This lovely little town in the Bay of Plenty with its magnificent beach can be reached by a 9 km hilly road. The town extends along the ocean up to Ohiwa Harbour. The town is not big, but there are some great places for eating out. Vanilla Restaurant on Pohutukawa Ave for example is nice and close by. If you prefer shopping or going to a movie, Whakatane is just 10 minutes away.
Ohope Beach offers a fantastic 11 kilometres of uninterrupted sandy beach and plenty of sunshine. It is great for swimming, surfing and other water sports and one of the safest beaches in the country. During the summer the beach is patrolled by professional life guards.
